Finding the Perfect Study Spots
Graduate school can be demanding, and where you study can have a big impact on your productivity and focus. We asked two of our Master of Social Work (MSW) students, Charlotte Rodio and Rachel Ifebuzo, to share their favorite on- and off-campus study spots—and how they’ve adapted their study habits to make the most of grad school life.
On-Campus Favorites
- Dewey Library (Downtown Campus): Dewey Library offers a unique look into the past, with its historic architecture and academic ambiance. It’s a favorite among students for its wide range of resources: books, computers, free printing, and supportive staff. But the real gem? The private study rooms you can reserve for free. Each room has helpful supplies and a quiet environment, perfect for writing a last-minute paper, studying for an exam, or working on a group project.
- Husted Hall: Also located on the Downtown Campus, Husted Hall is another top pick thanks to its welcoming, 24/7 atmosphere. With plenty of open tables and group seating areas, it’s ideal for collaborative projects or casual meetups with classmates. It’s a space where students come together at all hours to support one another and stay on track.
- University Library (Main Campus): When silence is a must, the quiet section of the University Library is the place to be. It's perfect for deep focus and solo study sessions—whether you're prepping for exams or working through complex readings.
- Liberty Terrace Study Rooms: For those living on campus, the study rooms at Liberty Terrace are a convenient and quiet option. They’re perfect for late-night study marathons or concentrated work sessions, with easy access from your dorm or apartment.
Off-Campus Favorites
- Washington Park: During warmer months, Washington Park is a favorite getaway for studying, socializing, and soaking in nature. Bring a blanket and snacks, and find a quiet spot under the trees. It's especially beautiful in May during the annual Tulip Fest—a perfect backdrop for a productive afternoon.
- The Crossings of Colonie: If you're looking for a bit of distance from campus, The Crossings Park in Colonie offers peaceful scenery with ponds, walking trails, and even outdoor workout equipment. It’s ideal for students who like to take study breaks to stretch, walk, or watch the ducks glide by. Bonus: you’ll likely see plenty of adorable dogs, too.
Whether you prefer the quiet halls of Dewey Library, the fresh air at Washington Park, or the convenience of Liberty Terrace, there’s a study spot for every kind of learner at UAlbany. As Rachel and Charlotte show, the right environment can make a huge difference in how you manage your time and energy as a grad student. Try out a few spots and see what works best for you!
