Five Essential Items to Pack for International Students

Moving from Ghana to study at UAlbany was both exciting and a little challenging. Deciding what to pack for such a big move was overwhelming, especially because I was preparing for a completely different environment. Looking back, there are essential items I’m glad I brought and others I wish I had. Here are my top packing tips to help future students feel at home in Albany, New York.
Comfort Foods and Spices from Home
When I first arrived at UAlbany, I missed the taste of home-cooked meals from my country. If you have favorite dishes from home, be sure to pack spices, dried ingredients, and other essentials that might be hard to find. Having a taste of familiar food can be incredibly comforting, especially during the adjustment period. Bring some non-perishable snacks like instant noodles, dried fruit, biscuits, or herbal teas for when you’re feeling nostalgic.
Personal Care Products
It can take some time to find the right personal care products that suit your skin and hair type in the U.S. If you’re used to specific brands for your hair care or skincare routine, consider bringing a few months’ supply until you find suitable alternatives in Albany. It will be helpful to bring along some shea butter or cocoa butter creams for the winter season.
Medications
Don’t forget to pack any prescription medications you might need, along with a copy of the prescription. Bring enough to last a few months, as pharmacies in the U.S. may not carry the same brands or dosages, and it can take time to get your health insurance set up to see a local doctor. This will ensure that you don’t face interruptions in your medication routine while adjusting to life in the U.S.
Documents and Important Papers
Make sure to pack important documents, including your passport, I-20 form, admission letter, and vaccination records. It’s also helpful to have digital copies stored securely online in case you lose the originals. Having these documents organized will make your arrival and check-in process much smoother.
Traditional Clothing
UAlbany has a vibrant international community with many opportunities to share your culture. For instance, traditional outfits are perfect for events like intercultural school gatherings. Having these and other cultural items will make you feel more connected to your roots and allow you to proudly represent your culture.
Tip: Pack small items that remind you of home, like family photos, crafts, or a small flag, to make your space feel more personal and make you feel closer to home.
And don’t worry if you forget something—Albany has plenty of stores and online shopping is always an option! For more information for international students at UAlbany, check out our international admissions page. Best of luck!
